Cordoba is known as the Caliphate city, given the centuries-long presence of Muslims, who first founded an emirate and then a splendid caliphate. Therefore the main monument in Cordoba is its famous Mosque, which today is actually the city’s cathedral.
The Mosque-Cathedral of Cordoba is essential to visit when in the city, since in the same building you can see a magnificent demonstration of Islamic art, evolving from the 8th century to the 13th, as well as Christian art within the cathedral. Therefore, this monument has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
But although the mosque is the great attraction in Cordoba, there are many other interesting places. In fact, the city is quite old, and one of the testaments to its age is the great Roman Bridge that joins the banks of the Guadalquivir River that passes through the city.
Another one of the places of interest is the Alcazar of the Christian Monarchs, commissioned in the 14th century. It is a walled construction that houses palatial rooms and historic gardens.
In reality, the entire historic centre of Cordoba is full of charm, especially in its most emblematic neighbourhood, which is the Jewish district. With an almost maze-like framework of narrow streets, all of the houses in this area are whitewashed and decorated with potted flowers. In fact, this is one of the city’s traditions, and the courtyards of different houses often compete to see who has the most and the best flowers.
In addition to those streets, there are many attractive plazas like that of Cristo de los Faroles or the Conde de Priego plaza where the monument to the mythic bullfighter Manolete is located, which is one of Cordoba’s most famous symbols. Cordoba is a city of bullfighting and is very characteristically Andalusian, and the best place to see this first-hand is the Julio Romero Bullfighting Museum, located on the popular Potro plaza.
These are some of Cordoba’s charms, but the experience of a trip to the city is complete with peaceful walks along its streets, where you’ll surely want to take many photographs to capture their beauty.
And during those walks, you can immerse yourself in the happiness of the city and enter its bars to taste its typical wines and sample their immense range of tapas.
